#200 closed enhancement (fixed)

"Download WordPress" button in header feels like a submit button for the search bar

Reported by: melchoyce's profile melchoyce Owned by: obenland's profile obenland
Milestone: Priority: low
Component: Global Header/Footer Keywords: needs-design-feedback has-screenshots close

Description

Suggestion: flip the button and the search bar: https://cloudup.com/c6flqSj1y51

This would stop users from accidentally hitting "download" when they mean to search, and provides better hierarchy overall within the header.

I would like to work on this (first ticket ever). Is ok if I assign it to me?

Started work on this with some assistance from @iandunn, but it was never assigned.

@couturefreak still interested in working on this? I know you started working on it — do you have anything you could share? Thanks!

I am definitely interested, @melchoyce.
Was waiting on a ping from @iandunn re: meta environment containing the files necessary to edit. I can pull the latest and 'vagrant up' to see if I have enough to try again though!

Great! Let me know if the latest doesn't have what you need.

  • Priority changed from normal to low

@hugobaeta had some ideas for how to improve the header, but I don't think we're ready for them yet. The button is looking pretty... tired anyway, especially compared to the shiny buttons in WP-Admin.

  • Summary changed from Download button in header feels like a submit button for the search bar to "Download WordPress" button in header feels like a submit button for the search bar

Now that we have the new homepage up, it makes more sense to move the button to the header/jumbotron.

How about we get some ideas for what this could be? With the new design does anyone have some suggestions?

I designed a download button.
This is very simple so as not to destroy the current design.
Please give me feedback.

Here is a suggestion: Using the download dashicon....

With the ongoing work in #3673 we should probably avoid changing the function of the button. What do you think about renaming it to "Get WordPress", and avoid the whole download confusion all together?

The confusion was about the download button looking like a submit button for the search bar, I don't see how changing "Download WordPress" to "Get WordPress" resolves that.

I'm fine with closing the ticket as wontfix or maybelater, I just don't think [7530] was the right fix for this.

I submit a design proposal for the "Get WordPress" button above.

This iteration based on @cathibosco1 's suggestion that I think adding an icon might help fix this proximity issue, but I suggest using the WordPress dashicons instead of download because the download dashicons may lead to 'instant download' misunderstanding.

  • Keywords close added

Given the age of this ticket and the original suggestion being related to the 'Get WordPress' button looking like a submit button for the search bar (which now is hidden), I'd recommend we close this ticket and open a new one if it's still needed.

  • Component changed from General to Global Header/Footer
  • Resolution set to fixed
  • Status changed from reopened to closed

Agreed. The global header has been revamped somewhat recently and no longer resembles the design that was reported here. I don't feel the reported issue applies to the new design.

If there are any issues with the new design, they should be filed in the wporg-mu-plugins GitHub repository, which includes the global header and footer blocks.

Note: See TracTickets for help on using tickets.
