I just ran into a plugin page (​https://wordpress.org/plugins/submitpress/) where the author is duplicated. Same author, same account.

It's because the author is listed twice in ​readme.txt:

Contributors: robertpeake, robert.peake

Yeah, not an error. Dunno why he would do that though. Perhaps confusion over what his username is.

For reference, his username is "robert.peake", but his "nicename" that shows up in URLs and such is "robertpeake". This may be why he has both in there. However, we accept either nicename or username in that field now, I think, so putting both in gives the correct result for each. Bit silly.
