Provide a dedicated Video section below Description

Description

A dedicated Video section below the Description would provide a clean interface for displaying the entirety of a video while preventing obfuscation due to the "Read more" link.

The following examples show plugins where video is either cut off or hidden altogether in the default state of the UI:

https://wordpress.org/plugins/woocommerce/ (cut off)
https://wordpress.org/plugins/give/ (cut off)
https://wordpress.org/plugins/wp-all-import/ (hidden)

A previous ticket #1789 attempted to detect videos in the first paragraph or div and expand the Description, but that is not helping these cases.

Giving Video its own section would fall in line with the other sections like Screenshots, FAQ, Ratings, etc. which each serve a single purpose.

The proposed Video section would only be visible if included in the Readme. Otherwise it would be omitted and Screenshots would remain the second section on the page.

Hi. Bridget from the Marketing team here.

Kevin brings up a valid point. The whole Brand of WordPress is elevated not just by the quality of the code of Core, nor by the quality of code of plugins, but also by the perception of them by the users. This includes developers, tinkerers, and even agencies.

If the goal of WordPress is to gain all of the audience base from beginner to enterprise, we should make the plugin directory as user-friendly yet professional as possible.

The more robust plugin shops (I do work for GiveWP.com as a disclaimer) provide useful marketing tools as well as videos. These deserve as much as a place in a tab on the directory as screenshots -- if not more.

It's been said that WordPress doesn't have an acquisition problem, it has a retention problem. We -- as a community of volunteers and business experts -- should do all we can do elevate the Brand individually, as plugin and theme developers, and as a whole.

I agree. A separate section for Videos would do a world of good for people who are downloading as well.

Videos are one of the first think I look for when evaluating a project. Giving them a place of prominence when available is a great user experience. I hope something like this can get implemented.

Ditto. I also suggested the cap of having first screenshot as a video ... the sep section sounds great.

Agreed, a video section would be a good addition.

I proposed this back when the Read More link limited the height of the Description. My rationale was to prevent the video container from being cut off or hidden altogether. Since the Read More was removed, the Description now shows in full so videos are no longer hidden.

I would no longer be in favor of a dedicated video section if that meant moving videos under a full-length Description, which can be quite long for some plugins. It's better IMO to render the video wherever it's placed in the Description as it is now.
