In the previous version all the URLs were auto-linked.

This is a good suggestion and it'd be great to have, but unfortunately previous attempts to do this sort of thing have conflicted with shortcodes and caused various problems. I'm closing it as wontfix for now, if we ever get the opportunity to overhaul the parser then we should definitely reconsider that.
