Description

There are some inconsistencies in the typography and formatting used on the About pages that could stand some improvement.

Quoting @tobifjellner from https://meta.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/3046#comment:164:

It would be good to make the whole "About" section more congruent in terms of typography. In many places, simple " quotes are used, but in some places there are typographical quotes called via html entities.

@tobifjellner do you think you'd want to create a patch for this?

Can't promise anything the nearest month. Quite busy at work. But in due course, yes.

Gotcha. Could you point me to an example so I know what we're looking for?

Looking at https://wordpress.org/about/
use it "out of the box", an should use typographical quotes ldquo and rdquo

Looking at https://wordpress.org/about/security/
WordPress' usability, extensibility, should use a correct apostrophe ’

and can be considered as the WordPress "bill of rights":

This is done in the #core chat room on Slack. It would be nice to somehow mark #core, for instance using code, or by linking to the relevant channel or /chat

WordPress' rich permissions

WordPress' permission system is used to control access to private information such an registered users' PII, commenters' email addresses Multiple apostrophes and even a typo (an - as)

The default theme which ships with core WordPress (currently "Twenty Seventeen")

And so on

I see. Yeah it seems like we used incorrect html entities, resulting in straight quotes rather than curly quotes.

@tellyworth @ocean90 how strongly do we feel about this? Strongly enough to voiding existing translations of the affected strings?

https://make.wordpress.org/core/handbook/best-practices/spelling/#quotation-marks 🤷‍♂️

Note that the current translations would only be marked as fuzzy. So they are not gone, they just need another review to check if the translations are still ok. I'm sure a few translators are already using the "correct" quotes in their language so they can quickly re-approve them.
