Description
Requests to XML sitemap URLs, such as https://wordpress.org/themes/sitemap.xml, https://wordpress.org/themes/sitemap-index-1.xml, https://wordpress.org/plugins/sitemap-index-1.xml currently redirect and append a trailing slash.
This should not occur; the redirect should be removed/prevented.

Replying to Otto42:
There is a feature in Jetpack that can generate sitemaps, but that should be turned off on all the sites by default? It might have been on for some reason earlier, but appears to be off now.
Jetpack Sitemaps were indeed enabled deliberately on a number of sites quite some time ago.

- Resolution invalid deleted
- Status changed from closed to reopened
But they're disabled now, seemingly?
Can we (re)enable, and configure/fix them?

It should be noted that the (currently disabled) sitemap URLs are also being referenced in https://wordpress.org/robots.txt. Either the sitemaps need to be re-enabled, or the robots.txt should remove these references.

- Component changed from General to Theme Directory
Looks like this only applies to the Theme Directory, not plugins?

- Keywords pending-systems added
For reference, this is primarily caused by this:

as mentioned in https://meta.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/4559#comment:9
AFAIK, we don't have any sitemaps on w.org.

Closing this since there isn't a sitemap, but if we decide to make one happen, then things like this should be considered in a more overarching ticket.
