#5951 new enhancement

It should be easier for a user to go to the right language support forum.

Description

Recently, I was showing in class how you can get support for general issues and such on the WP support forums. (My students are using their own WP website to show their final projects and to start building a portfolio website)

But, I noticed that not even student goes to the Dutch version and so, ends up on the English support forum instead of the Dutch/Flemish one.

So, my suggestion is that on pages like: https://wordpress.org/support/forums/ (or the localised ones), that there is a dropdown of some sorts to go to another region/language.

It can be same logic banner, which is used for plugins/theme directories.

Sometimes its guesses arent perfect but mostly it works in a efficient way.

That's also an excellent idea. Mostly people are looking for support in their native language and going to another language for support wouldn't be something that naturally happens right? Unless, it's English ofc.

It's already there. The language bar shows up based on the language chosen in your browser.

If you're using Chrome, go to chrome:settings. Search for Language in the settings, and you will find a setting to "Order languages based on your preference". Add a language other than English to that list, and we'll start showing that on the homepage and the support page, as well as the plugin/theme pages.

Your browser tells the language to the site, and the site shows that based on that information and what sites we have in what languages.

Interesting. It's not there on Opera.

I've never used Opera, but every browser should have some way for you to set the language header so that it knows your preferred languages. This is a function of browsers. Look in the opera settings for "preferred languages" or something to that effect.

The banner is only on https://wordpress.org/support/ and not on https://wordpress.org/support/forums/.

Well, tbh, I think it should appear on the support forum page too.

I think it would be really great if https://wordpress.org/support/ had some copy on the page advertising the existence of localized support. I would image that for lots of reasons, people might default to the English experience (including in their browser) and not know that the option is available.

How about adding a line like

"Get Support in your own language", linked to https://make.wordpress.org/support/handbook/contributing-to-the-wordpress-forums/support-forums-in-your-language/

This is technically a duplicate of #5424, but as there's more activity in this ticket, I'll close that one for now.

I agree we should probably extend the locale suggestion banner to be displayed on all forum pages that aren't directly related to a plugin or theme, and not just on the front page (users may never see the front page of the forums)

I'm unable to word it better than this. Since I also see people sometimes stumble in the Dutch forums speaking English... but that might be somewhat unrelated.

This came up during last week's bug scrub.

If I understand correctly, we are currently combining IP Geo-location with browser language. The issue does not appear so much detection but A) Showing the message in more places and B) Improving the content of the message.

Include link to full list of languages

I would propose suggesting a specific language (just as it works now) but also adding a direct link to the full list of languages, as @sterndata suggests.

Show the banner in more places

Let's show the banner in https://wordpress.org/support/forums/
Any other places where we could also show it?

WP.org site redesign

Let's take into account that the wp.org is being redesign and go for something simple, as it will likely need to be revisited once the new design has been rolled out.
