Open-source News Theme

While we were building the new bbPress theme we discovered that the WordPress theme live on ​https://wordpress.org/news/ would've been the best starting point. We now had to hack together stuff from various places.

Wouldn't it make sense to open-source that theme used at /news/ as well?

Oooh! Please! I can't believe that /news/ theme is not open-source yet! Me and other people want to use WordPress and not another CMS because we want to looks like /news/! That is first WP theme we saw! I was looking themes for hours trying to find it! And I also was asking for it in forums ​https://wordpress.org/support/topic/which-is-wordpressorg-theme-nameurl

I'm very surprised...

Yep, that should be open-sourced. Rosetta then can be made a child theme of it.

A new News theme was developed and ​launched back in February 2022.

The code is available at ​https://github.com/WordPress/wporg-news-2021/, where development, feature requests, and bug reports are being handled.
