The links you're referring to are RSS feed links (as denoted by the icon before them); and as such, if you do not have a feed reader installed, an XML document rendered in the browser is expected.

Personally; I think these should be removed from prominence, if not removed entirely from view.

As to why WordPress and bbPress do not ship with a XSLT stylesheet for RSS feeds, I don't know..
