Description

We have account settings in two places:

This ticket proposes that we restructure the "WP.org Profile" by combining fields and moving the Two-Factor Authentication settings from the "Forum Profile" to the "WP.org Profile" making account-related settings easier to find.

This is how "WP.org Profile" is currently organized:

General

  • Username
  • Email
  • Security (Links to support forum)
  • GitHub Username
  • Name
  • About Me
  • Website Url
  • Current Location
  • WordPress Origin Story

As you can see we have a mix of Account-related (u/email/security/GitHub) and profile fields.

Extras

  • Company
  • Job Title
  • Interests
  • WordPress Usage

It isn't clear what "Extras" is referring to as these are simply more profile fields. I first thought, "Oh maybe it's because its all the meta details", but no, fields in the "General" section also appear there.

Contribution
(This is fine.)

Suggestion:

  • Rename "General" to "Profile"
  • Move the following fields to "Account & Security" tab
    • Username
    • GitHub Username
    • Security (2fa controls from Forum Profile)
  • Remove "Email" as its included in 2fa.

I'll admit that the "Security" section would need some visual updates to make it feel more natural here but I do believe it's a better place to have it.

Please keep the "forum role" field on the first page/tab of the profile. It will make it a lot easier to manage blocking/unblocking users.

Quick note: Rosetta forums have their own settings and partially separate profiles

Assuming this is about the "Forum Role" field found on https://wordpress.org/support/users/profile, I don't plan to make any immediate changes to the forum profile except for moving 2fa to the "WP.org Profile" although many of those fields are duplicates and update the same backend value.

Thanks for the heads up.

@tobifjellner Thanks for the heads up. I'm assuming these values only show up on the "Forum Profile" side and not the "WP.org Profile" correct? If that's the case, this ticket doesn't plan on updating profiles on that side yet. It's a good call out seeing that profiles.wp.org isn't currently translatable.

noting that we'll need to update any documentation which shows how or where to setup these fields or where they are. example: https://learn.wordpress.org/lesson-plan/creating-a-wordpress-org-account/

@paulkevan Thanks. I've opened a ticket for the documentation: https://github.com/WordPress/Learn/issues/2649.
