#8076 new feature request

WordPress Volunteer should be Listed in User Activity. Add "Volunteer" role/acknowledgment to WordPress.org user profiles

Description

Ticket Description:
Currently, when a community member is selected as a Volunteer (for WordCamps or other events), there is no acknowledgment shown on their WordPress.org user profile especially if the user has volunteered before.

This is different from other roles such as Speaker, which is displayed on the profile and helps highlight a user’s contributions.

Proposal:
Add "Volunteer" as a recognized role that appears on WordPress.org profiles, in the same way "Speaker" is displayed. a message like "Confirmed as a Volunteer for WordCamp CityName Year"

Benefits:

Provides recognition to volunteers for their contributions on the user profile's Activity info.

Encourages more people to volunteer by making the contribution visible and appreciated.

Brings consistency between how Speakers and Volunteers are represented.

Additional Notes:

Could use the same UI pattern currently used for the Speaker activity.

  • Priority changed from high to normal

Is there an appropriate badge for this already or would we need to make a new badge for it?

The wordcamp badges are basically fed from data from wordcamp.org, so volunteers would have to be marked as such somehow in that system to best automate this.

A badge already exists, only an activity statement is lacking

I think this is a larger issue around Badges, activity entry items are often not present when a badge is granted.

  • This is somewhat expected for some badges, as other activity items occur before hand (Such as Core Props -> Core Contributor badge).
  • Some badges have explicit messages (WordCamp Speaker/Organiser: Activity of Confirmed as a speaker/organiser, Granted a badge as part of that).
  • Some badges have no activity item that's related (Team badges, Volunteer badges)

Given Activity items often fall off the visible items due to other activity, adding this one doesn't seem super important to me.

The recognition a volunter could have is already on the badge which is permanent rather than the on Activity items..

What makes this unique and important is the fact that some contributors are sponsored to volunteer at WordCamps just in the same way contributors are sponsored to speak at WordCamps.

Adding this statement "Confirmed as a volunteer for [WordPress_Event_Name] in the activity just the same way it happens for Speakers helps to confirm Volunteer state at the time and helps with Transparency with the Sponsors.

Also helps in CV especially since we are encouraging students to commit themselves to WordPress and WordPress events. - Please review this again
