#8286 closed enhancement (fixed)

Unable to find a way to add social media profile links to WordPress.org profiles

Description

Issue Description
Some WordPress.org contributor profiles display social media links such as LinkedIn, X/Twitter, Facebook, and others.

Example profile: https://profiles.wordpress.org/nilovelez/
Screenshot: https://ibb.co/VY1jXS4z
No image "with-social" attached to Ticket #8286

However, when editing my own profile, I can only find the option to connect a GitHub account and cannot find any interface to add, edit, or manage other social profile links.

Profile: https://profiles.wordpress.org/abdullah17/
Screenshot: https://ibb.co/HfbCkG4g
No image "without-social" attached to Ticket #8286

Expected Behavior

Users should be able to:

  • Add or connect social profile links (LinkedIn, X/Twitter, Facebook, etc.) from their profile settings.
  • Edit existing social profile links/accounts
  • Remove/disconnect social profile profiles when needed.

Actual Behavior

Only GitHub account connection is available. No settings are visible for adding or managing other social media profiles.

Additional Information

Attached screenshot shows the available profile settings and the absence of social profile management options.

It is unclear whether:

  • The feature has been removed.
  • The feature is only available to some users.
  • Existing social links are legacy data from a previous profile system.

Clarification or restoration of this functionality would be appreciated.

Add them to your Gravatar.com account instead. WordPress.org pulls them from Gravatar.

Social media links on WordPress.org profiles aren't stored or edited here. They're pulled automatically from the verified accounts on your Gravatar profile, matched by the email on your WordPress.org account. That's why you only saw the GitHub connection: there was no on-screen hint that the social links come from Gravatar. Nothing was removed, and it's not user-specific. For example, nilovelez's profile shows icons because they have four verified accounts on Gravatar (X, LinkedIn, Bluesky, Mastodon).

To add yours:

  1. Go to https://gravatar.com/profile/verified-accounts and sign in with the email tied to your WordPress.org account.
  2. Add your accounts (LinkedIn, X/Twitter, Facebook, Mastodon, Bluesky, and more).
  3. Each account has to show as verified. Only verified accounts appear on the profile.

The icons then show up on your profile automatically (give it a refresh).

To fix the discoverability, I've added a Social Links entry to the Account & Security tab of the profile editor, right next to the GitHub connection, that explains the Gravatar source and links directly to the Gravatar verified-accounts editor. So you no longer have to know about the Gravatar dependency to find it.

Fixed in r24830.

I was going to say, but @yaniiliev got to it before me :)

Let's add a Gravatar - You can set your Avatar via Gravatar, any Social media accounts added there will show on your profile connection item there. This has come up before, a few times.

It is shown on two places now so hopefully it will solve this confusion.
