Profiles show incorrect flagged statuses

Description

The profiles of users currently show two flags for users that are b-tagged (bozo-ed in bbPress): modwatched and blocked.

The blocked keyword should probably be reserved for users where the User Type has been set to Blocked, it is currently tied in to the Akismet Never Trust option.

I personally found the labeling in the support profiles to be a bit unclear, so on the Profiles site I sought to make the nomenclature more generally comprehensible. As such, these are the warning labels possible in Profiles:

  • "banned" : The support forum profile "User Type" field for user is set to (the unfortunately named) "blocked". This means user cannot log in at all (thus "banned" from dotorg).
  • "blocked" : The support forum profile "Akismet never trust" checkbox is checked for the user. This means the user cannot post to forums (but can still log in, thus "blocked" from posting).
  • "modwatched" : The support forum profile bozo checkbox is checked for the user. This means the user is under observation by moderators when posting to the forum.

If the consensus is that the labeling is still confusing, things can certainly be changed. I still don't like the labeling in the support forums, and bear in mind that the Profiles pages labels are also seen by administrators not familiar with the labeling used in the support forums.

Perhaps rather than labels they can be short phrases: "banned from logging in", "blocked from posting to forums", "under moderator observation".

Note to onlookers: these flags are only visible to WordPress.org administrators and support forum moderators.

Ahh yes I wasn't bringing in the other teams view when I was thinking this through, at least in the forum setting the "modwatched" flag is usually auto-set by bbPress, if they are really being observed for bad behavior etc. we add both that and Akismet Never Trust to the user.

I don't know if it's a widespread confusion, just one of those things I've kept meaning to mention. The user can still post to the forums as well if graced with the Akismet flag, but everything goes into the spam queue and needs manual approval so this one slides into the modwatch word quite a bit.

I feel we should just use plain language.

I struggle to remember what is bozo, blocked, and so on.

Sometimes we still recover posts from "Akismet Never Trust" users, they're just *less* trustworthy than most, but not bad enough to ban. Considering that, I'd like to propose switching Akismet Never Trust to "Hidden" instead.

Is this still an issue? The "Akismet never trust" option doesn't exist anymore so there is only blocked (cannot log in at all) and modwatched.

  • Keywords reporter-feedback removed
  • Resolution set to worksforme
  • Status changed from new to closed

No longer an issue, these are all good now after the bbPress upgrade.
