Description
Flagship WordCamps are promoted on the homepage of WordPress.org (English) website. I would really love to see a similar treatment for local WordCamps if there is a corresponding Rosetta site.
For example, we used to promote WordCamps in Japan on ja.wordpress.org homepage but this is no longer possible because of Rosetta theme change.

How about adding a widget area to Rosetta sites?

Unfortunately I can see a Widget area getting used/abused for a range of things, the homepage is specifically locked down to reduce the customisation and to bring it closer to the WordPress branding. Adding customisation there doesn't feel like the right step forward.
Another thing that has come up in the past when this has been proposed (I'm unsure if a Trac ticket exists) is that not all locales are country specific, or apply to multiple countries.
Perhaps a better option may be to investigate the ability of adding a "local events" section conditionally to rosetta homepages that are mostly country-specific? That could include things like Meetups in addition to WordCamps (ie. anything that appears in the dashboard).
All the above being said, I'd love a way to pull in the WordCamp banners directly from https://central.wordcamp.org/schedule/ without any customisation being offered (Just having it show up ~3 months beforehand for example). But I can also see that being a challenge in some countries such as Australia where this year there's 3 WordCamps within a 90 day period.
