Description

The video player controls disappear after closing fullscreen. This can be reproduced on the WordPress.tv site: https://wordpress.tv/2020/03/30/gregory-collins-small-business-search-engine-optimization/

To reproduce:

  1. Start playing the video
  2. Click on the fullscreen button
  3. Exit fullscreen by pressing ESC or pressing the fullscreen button again

The quality, fullscreen, and speed buttons will no longer appear.

Browser: Chrome (other browsers seemingly unaffected)
OS: macOS

What version of Chrome are you running? It seems to work for me on mac + Chrome.

Just noting that we'll report this upstream to VideoPress/WordPress.com and close this once we have a reproducible test case.

Version 80.0.3987.162 (Official Build) (64-bit)
macOS 10.15.4

Oddly enough, it doesn't happen on the video player on WordPress.tv's homepage, but it does happen on video-specific pages. I tried running Chrome with no extensions and it still happened.

Thanks for confirming!

I've been unable to reproduce it with macOS 10.14.6

  • Version 80.0.3987.149 (Official Build) (64-bit)
  • Version 80.0.3987.162 (Official Build) (64-bit)

The only thing i notice, is that the controls hide after a few moments of no mouse activity, and require the mouse to hover over the video to return.

I just used Browserstack Mojave (10.14) + Chrome (79) and was able to reproduce it.

The controls on the right are no longer showing after going fullscreen then coming out of fullscreen.

I've passed this onto the VideoPress developers in the hope that they have some idea of what's going on here :)

Replying to dd32:

ah.. I duplicated it.. This doesn't happen for those of who work at Automattic (VideoPress) and are logged into WordPress.com. I've looked into something similar before but I wasn't able to find out why.

Right on, let me know if it'd be better to re-create this ticket elsewhere for tracking. I really appreciate your quick response and insights with this.

Works fine on Windows 10 with Edge, fails on Windows 10 with Chrome (as in the ticket)
Video on https://wordpress.com/support/videopress/ seems to work fine on Win10+Chrome!
Chrome version Version 80.0.3987.149

EDIT:
Updated to Chrome Version 80.0.3987.162 (Official Build) (64-bit)
Exactly the same as above

@swb1192 seems to work now, can you confirm?

Chrome 81.0.4044.113

Oh nice, the buttons appear now. The only strange thing leftover is that the fullscreen button is left in the blue :active state after exiting fullscreen.

Thanks for following up.

@dd32 do you want to follow up with VideoPress on this or can I open a ticket there (if you explain me how :-) )

I've followed up with the team again, I didn't see any changes made, so I'm not sure if it's actually fixed deliberately or if it was a side effect of another fix

I recently heard from a large video site developer that Chrome broke a lot of things related to video players and fixes were incoming, so that may be what played out here.

Note: See TracTickets for help on using tickets.
