Thanks for the report! Since this was filed, Openverse has moved to a dedicated domain and its theme has undergone a refresh. The responsive issue reported here for the home page is no longer present. If you do come across any further issue with the Openverse site, please file them in their ​GitHub repository (ideally after checking that it hasn't already been reported).
