Rating System For Relevance Sorting

I'd like to propose the implementation of a photo rating or like/dislike system, along with a sorting feature within the photo directory. This should enable users to rate photos based on their quality or relevance, akin to the likes and dislikes system found on platforms such as YouTube.

Subsequently, sorting photos in search results by their ratings/likes could significantly enhance the user experience, making it easier to find high-quality and relevant images for their needs.

Considering the considerable amount of work required for implementing a rating/like feature, an alternative approach could be to introduce a favoriting feature like in patterns/themes/plugins #7513. Then, images could be sorted in search results based on the number of favorites they have received. In this case, this ticket would solely focus on sorting images by relevance, excluding the rating system.

Combining the the approach sounds good to me.

Specifically; Rather than having Ratings & Favourites functionality, have a Liked Photos view.

Agreed, having a system to favorite photos would also make it easy to have that view sorted by most favorited photos like other WP directories "most popular" sorting

I too think that a Liking feature would be better and more used than a Favourite feature.
Like exactly the same behavior but instead of naming it favorite photos name it liked photos.
