The highest-profile link is probably the one on https://wordpress.org/about/ — should the link just be removed, or is there another place to link to? an archive.org version?

This will also change the string for all the Rosetta versions of the page.

It's also linked on https://wordpress.org/news/2024/10/spoon/. How far back should checking the site go?

I think https://wordpress.org/about/ is probably the main issue. I think the best is to completely remove the link and replace it with "b2/cafelog" without link. So Rosetta versions won't display the link at all on their side as well.

For these links across the wp.org and associated properties, I suspect we can (1) either update to remove the link entirely (2) try to coalesce on agreement for an existing link to use instead (e.g. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WordPress#History, https://github.com/WordPress/book/blob/trunk/Content/Part%201/2-b2-cafelog.md) or (3) create a new page on wp.org/about that hosts a concise summary of the ancestral b2/cafelog project.

I've removed the link on /about, it's deploying now so it should be updated shortly.

Checked the current state of every page named in this ticket, plus two Rosetta locales.

Page cafelog links text mentions
https://wordpress.org/about/ 0 1
https://wordpress.org/about/history/ 0 0
https://ur.wordpress.org/about/ 0 1
https://fr.wordpress.org/about/ 0 1
https://wordpress.org/news/2024/10/spoon/ 1 1

Method, run in the console on each page:

const hits = [...document.querySelectorAll('a[href]')].filter(a => /cafelog/i.test(a.href));
console.log(location.pathname, '| links:', hits.length, '| text mentions:', (document.body.innerText.match(/cafelog/gi)||[]).length);
hits.forEach(a => console.log('  ', a.href, '|', a.textContent.trim().slice(0,60)));

@ryelle's fix on /about/ held. No link on the English page, and the text mention is the unlinked "b2/cafelog" that @audrasjb asked for in comment:2.

The Rosetta concern raised in comment:1 looks resolved. Urdu and French both render the mention without a link, so the string change propagated to the translated pages rather than leaving an old linked version in place.

One link is still live. On https://wordpress.org/news/2024/10/spoon/, "Forking is Beautiful", October 2024:

https://cafelog.com/  |  anchor text: "b2/cafelog project"

On @ryelle's question in comment:1 about how far back to check the news archive, https://wordpress.org/news/?s=cafelog returns that post as the only match, so the archive scope appears to be this one post rather than an open-ended sweep.

I checked links and visible text only. Anything in an image, a title attribute, or a page not reachable from these routes is outside what I looked at.
