#3315 closed enhancement (fixed)
Footer links are needed for Rosetta sites.

Description
Rosetta sites currently have no footer links, primarily because the links in the Global footer aren't always relevant for them. I would, however, like to add a few links back that are project-relevant, as well as a select few that are sensible for the Rosetta sites themselves.

As mentioned in the conversation on Slack, I'd like to have a new menu area in the footer.
In addition, it would be great to have an option to add social account(s) like the English footer.

@chanthaboune What's the latest on this? Did you have a specific set of links in mind, or would a secondary nav menu work for you?

In addition to links in footer, there should be a way to add a sidebar with a menu/widget area:
- On https://wordpress.org/about/, there are two sidebars: a list of subpages on the left, a list of lead developers and contributors on the right.
- On https://ru.wordpress.org/about/, we could put some general WP information (still to be added) and a list of team members, but there's no place for a list of subpages like https://ru.wordpress.org/about/requirements/, so those URLs are unintentionally "hidden" at the moment.

Just caught up on #3046 :) Might not have to be a sidebar then, just a place to put a list subpages somewhere.

I don't want to make any hasty decisions on behalf of all locale sites (secondary nav, etc), but I do think we have a few links that must be added. This is my list of Priority 1 items:
Priority 1
- About
- Privacy Policy
- License
- Get Involved
- Support

After looking through this again, I think the benefits of adding all the links actually outweighs the downsides - and I previously felt otherwise.
I was going to list all the links and my thoughts, but it mostly boiled down to this:
- The majority of links are useful to all sites
- There are a few footer links which are not localisable, but that should be there regardless (or that are already linked to anyway)
- There are a few footer links which are going to be localisable soon (/about/*)
- There are a few footer links which are not useful to either WordPress.org or locale sites, and should just be removed IMHO - but removal should be in it's own ticket.
There's probably a list of links which locale sites would benefit from being able to add, but the simple fact is that they can't right now, and the footer design doesn't really allow for it.
If locale sites need extra links there, a separate ticket explaining the need for it and a few use-cases would be appreciated.
I'm going to import the strings for localisation into the new wporg theme, they're pretty short strings so probably need some translator comments, if someone else agrees a patch would be appreciated.

Just to answer all the outstanding requests here:

Initially I'm going to push it out with the global social media accounts. I can totally see a want for locales to customise the social media accounts though. Lets see how it goes, if we need to hide them for locales or allow overrides we can add that as a second iteration.

- Resolution set to fixed
- Status changed from new to closed
I'm going to close this as fixed for now.
The global footer was enabled last week - example: https://sv.wordpress.org/#wporg-footer
edit: Should've mentioned, the strings are in the WordPress.org Translation project.
There are a few remaining questions here
- How can locales add extra links?
- How can a locale change the social media accounts?
Both of these need further investigation, and deserve their own tickets if anyone feels strongly enough for them.
- I don't believe adding extra links should be permitted for now, if anyone has a good use-case ticket it though.
- I expect changing the social media accounts would be beneficial in some parts of the world, however I'd want a design that put them along side the global social media accounts rather than replacing them I think. A ticket exploring that with these comments in mind would be appreciated from anyone who feels strongly about it.
@obenland – Would this be an interesting addition to the new theme for WordPress.org?
