Beyond what was provided in the ticket, there are two things to note:

  1. The convention is for each badge to correspond to a contributor team (as is the case here) and that there are actually two related badges, a team badge and a contributor badge.
    1. The team badge is for those who are currently and actively members of the design team. It is a temporary badge only held during such time as a person is considered current and active and should be removed once those are no longer the case.
    2. The contributor badge is a permanent badge assigned when someone has made some level of contribution to the team. (The team can determine their own criteria for what merits the badge; generally some measure of active contribution and not merely participation, though that may depend on the team.) Naturally anyone assigned a team badge would also be implied to have the contributor badge if not already assigned.
  2. Assignment of either badge could be automated if the criteria can be programmatically detected. In some cases this is clear (user assigned admin role on a site, user is cited in a commit props, user has X many posts, user has a theme/plugin, etc) and other times it's more of a consensus by the team leads for notable, less-easily-detected contribution (exceptionally helpful in Slack chat, consistent and high level of participation, proposing good ideas, contributions at contributor days, etc). Automation criteria need not be defined now (if ever), but it's worth noting.

Also making note here that the fill color for team badges will be #fbf0da (75% tint of the base #eec26a color).

(I should get the above added to the meta P2...)

That said, @melchoyce, are the users mentioned in the ticket candidates for the team badge? Or should those noted as "lead" be given the team badge and everyone given the contributor badge?

@hugobaeta
@empireoflight

Contributors
@melchoyce
@karmatosed
@joen
@michaelarestad
@hugobaeta
@empireoflight
@liljimmi

If anyone on that list disagrees with either designation, happy to leave it up to them. Likewise, if someone thinks they should be on one of those lists, please chime in.
