Description
It's useful to know how many plugins are live on WordPress.org: https://wordpress.org/plugins/ header shows the number.
[See screenshot]
Could we update the https://wordpress.org/themes/ header to have this important information also?
Useful in many contexts, especially in promoting the breadth of WordPress.org as a product.

Define "active" theme.
7479 is the total number of published themes visible in the directory.
The popularity number is a bit more complicated, but it best be described as themes with more than zero active installs reported, and which are also older than 2 weeks.

total number of published themes visible in the directory.
Yes, this definition means active to me. Themes that are published and available to use.
(Inactive means can't use it from the directory any more, just via SVN repo maybe. Which seems to have 20,000 or so.)
Thoughts on adding the number to the Themes Directory header?

- Keywords needs-design added
I have nothing against adding the total number of themes to the header, but it should be noted that many themes can't be found unless you know they exist
- Popular: Last updated within 2 years and at least 2 weeks old
- Search: Exact match or last updated within 2 years
- Category/Tags: Last updated within 2 years
Adding needs-design
as the largest blocker to this IMHO is that there's no obvious place to show the number. There's discussion elsewhere within the Theme Review team about wanting to change up the design entirely, which would be the ideal time to look into this IMHO.
